Items that expire or arrive at the warehouse first are sent out first, so you’ll never have to worry that customers are getting products close to or past their best-before due dates.

Shipfusion’s lot tracking system also recommends when you need to replenish inventory based on FEFO/FIFO product movements, so you can stay ahead of stock outs.

FAQ

What is lot tracking?

Lot tracking, also known as lot number tracking, involves assigning a unique identifier (or lot number) to a batch of items with similar production characteristics that have been received, stored, or shipped from a warehouse.

A lot or batch can include raw materials such as produce culled from the same harvest, intermediates like the parts needed to assemble catalytic converters for automobiles, or finished goods, including pharmaceuticals or beauty products with the same expiration date. It could also comprise goods manufactured on the same date at a particular facility or materials shipped on the same date.

The number of items within any lot can vary as well. For example, for an online vendor selling workout supplements, one lot may contain 50 large plastic containers of vanilla-flavoured protein powder that expires on a specific day. Another lot could contain the same amount of chocolate or strawberry-flavoured powder, while still another could contain 300 boxes of ten protein bars each.

What is the goal of lot tracking?

The goal of lot number tracking is to provide a system that traces products from their origins through production and distribution processes up to their final receipt – and possibly return – by the customer.

A single source of truth about a product’s journey across a network of suppliers, brands, retailers and consumers, lot tracking also provides data for analysis.

How does lot tracking help in the event of a recall?

Quick action to find and remove defective or contaminated products from your supply chain protects customers and reduces the recall event’s short-term impact on your bottom line and long-term consequences on your business viability.

In addition to saving your brand’s reputation, quick, well-managed recalls can actually increase customer trust and loyalty.

If there’s a question about a product’s integrity within your supply chain, the dedicated, in-warehouse Account Manager assigned to your business will use our lot tracking system to locate your product – and can even inspect it if required – all within minutes, not hours, days or weeks.

Can Shipfusion’s lot tracking system scale up to handle rapid order growth or company expansion?

Yes! Partnering with a third-party logistics (3PL) provider can be a game-changer for scaling within ecommerce companies. As your orders increase, we ensure that your deliverability remains uncompromised. From managing inventory to handling surges during peak seasons, we provide the foundation for your growth. Whether it’s Black Friday or Cyber Monday, we can handle it.

Can lot tracking help verify that the shipping duties and sales taxes levied on my goods and products were correct?

Yes! Lot number tracking can help prevent overcharges on duties for imported goods by allowing you to compare the number of lots and products received at various ports or transfer stations with the duty charges levied on them.

Similarly, when consumers purchase your product, you can use lot number tracking to connect sales figures to the sales taxes levied on those articles.

Can small- and medium-sized businesses use lot tracking?

Yes! Small-, medium- and large-sized businesses can ALL easily implement lot number tracking with Shipfusion’s lot tracking system, access sophisticated fulfillment technology that optimizes packaging for reduced shipping costs, plus take advantage of our exclusive shipping rates for major carriers.

Whatever your business is, you can make it more efficient, accountable and profitable by lot tracking with Shipfusion.
